Signed the Contract!

09/26/2010 This morning begins our journey. We signed the contract and handed over a check for the initial purchases. Ed will be back this week to measure and order the windows and take some measurements. We have decided to go with wooden windows to preserve the look of our house that was built in 1800. With painting, windows should last 200 years - well past our stay!

Two pictures that show the demo of the interior of the house.

This is where our bedroom and the computer/office room was.

Framing and construction of the addition of our new master bedroom over the garage.

The french doors go out to the porch and look over the backyard.

Three pictures of the addition.

View of the addition from the yard.

See the porch over the garage.
New center stairway located as you walk in the front of the house.

Two pictures of the new family room/living room which is where the office and the office hallway was.

Looking out at the new hallway that connects to the kitchen.

Two photos of the girls room as it was under construction.

Here are a variety of pictures of the new dining room.
Here is a picture of the new office that Jerry did.  It is where the old tv room is.  He cut in two doors and now the waiting room goes the opposite way as it used to.

                                                 Dining Room all torn apart
                                        Almost finished Dining Room!
Strapping on Dining Room Ceiling before sheetrock

                                                    Plastering Dining Room
Demolition of new Living Room (remember the green walls?)
                                                 Looking up the new stair
Living Room after demolition
The renovation continues and it is starting to take shape.  Three contracts later, we seem to have a final plan.  Only snag is that the house is too close to the road (like we built it, haha) and it doesn't fit with the town zoning code so building of the addiction over the garage can't start until variance is approved.  Let's keep our fingers crossed on that one!  Anyways, the dining room is almost done with plaster and trim around the windows.  Need to paint walls and molding.  Jerry and I moved the office this weekend and except for painting, that is pretty good.  He is seeing clients in the new office as we speak.  Next order of business is the new living room which will be great.  New staircase in and maybe treads will be put down this week.

January 23, 2011

lightning rod tip found in wall
front of house

There was a chimney here - soon will be stairway to second floor

Our Dining Room
The front of the house is essentially done!  All there is left to do is the front steps which we will do in the Spring and the lights on the front of the house which we have and will be installed when Ed starts working with the electrical work.  Now, phase 2!  The front rooms are all emptied and the chimney is gone which actually went pretty uneventfully.  Christmas day activities included utilizing Alex and Jeff to move the piano into the kitchen. (Anyone interested in a beautiful antique upright piano for a very reasonable price?) The past two weeks have been mainly about shoring up the ceilings, repairing beams and putting in new posts to even out the floors upstairs.  It is amazing how the floors are almost even upstairs.  Next order of business is framing the front two rooms, sheetrock, builiding the stairs,  and repairing the wood floor. Can't wait to move the dining room table and hutch back in the dining room!

The Front Is Coming Together

December 16, 2010.  Now we are on to the fun stuff.  Windows were tricky to install because the house is crooked and windows needed to be "tucked behind" structural beams.  Finally, all the windows were in and then the insullation was installed.  The house is warmer than ever!  A pressure treated beam installed along the bottom to secure the foundation and to "try" to give the illusion that the house is square.  Finally, the clapboards are starting to go up.  Jerry painted every clapboard in the garage with a borrowed propane heater keeping both Jerry warm and the paint from freezing.  Thank you to Jackie Hall for the loan of the heater. Notice the old crate found in the wall upstairs from a "Celluloid Starch" company in New Haven CT.  Front of house about 70% done.  Yaaaaaay!
